Yamana Gold falls 8% on Q1 results: Canadian market movers

On Wednesday, the top TSX mover was Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX: T.YRI, Stock Forum). It fell 8.3% and was trading at $11.43 on volume of 4.5 million shares.

On April 30, the gold producer announced its financial and operating results for the first quarter of 2013.

The company reported net earnings of $102.1 million or $0.14 per share for the first quarter, compared with net earnings of $170.0 million or $0.23 for the three months ended March 31, 2012.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX: T.CNQ, Stock Forum) was the second most active stock on the TSX. The stock was down 1.3% and trading at $29.17 on volume of 3.7 million.

On April 5, the crude oil and natural gas producer announced the approval of its intention to make a normal course issuer bid through the facilities of Toronto Stock Exchange.

The notice provides that Canadian Natural may, during the 12 month period commencing April 9, 2013 and ending April 8, 2014, purchase for cancellation on Toronto Stock Exchange, alternative Canadian markets, and the New York Stock Exchange up to 54.6 million shares, being 5% of the 1.09 billion outstanding common shares as at March 31, 2013.

Madalena Ventures Inc. (TSX: V.MVN, Stock Forum) was the volume leader on the TSX Venture Exchange. It was up 4.5% and was trading at $0.35 on volume of 3.4 million.

On April 30 the upstream oil and gas company said results of an independent evaluation showed unconventional shale resources with an estimated 34.8 billion barrels of oil equivalent of petroleum initially in place on the company's unconventional shale resources on its three land blocks within the Neuquen basin, Argentina.

The second most active stock on the TSX Venture was Honey Badger Exploration Inc. (TSX: V.TUF, Stock Forum) It rallied 150% and was trading at $0.025 after 1.6 million shares changed hands.

The mineral exploration company had no related news to explain the high volume in trading.
