Mid-morning report: stocks up

The TSX composite was higher, rising 118.05 points to 12,497.69 in mid-morning trading on Friday. The Dow was up 156.64 to 14,988.22, while NASDAQ gained 43.41 to 3,384.04.

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX: T.CNQ, Stock Forum) said on Thursday its first-quarter profit fell by half as lower prices and one-time charges offset record oil production. It rose 2.7% to $30.28 a share.

The European Commission said gross domestic product in the eurozone will fall 0.4% this year, compared with a February prediction of a 0.3% drop.

The price of gold was up US$1.12 to US$1,468.29 an ounce, while silver eased US$0.22 to U$24.08 an ounce.
