Coveted Cannabis Research License Goes to Leading Green Tech Co.

Dave Jackson Dave Jackson, Stockhouse
0 Comments| August 28, 2019

As the global cannabis space continues to grow at a furious pace, so too does the need to responsibly dispose of cannabis waste…in both an environmentally and economically-sound way.

And that rapid growth has raised tough environmental questions, including how to make packaging recyclable, reduce water and electricity consumption and, in some cases, dispose of hazardous chemicals used in processing. Among the most complex and scientifically-challenging is how to handle producers’ organic waste.

Enter an innovative Delta BC-based company that has just recently been awarded a Health Canada Cannabis Research License to develop its aerobic waste digester technology for the treatment of cannabis waste.

On August 27, 2019, Micron Waste Technologies Inc. (CSE: MWM, OTC: MICWF, Forum) – a leading developer of waste treatment systems for food and cannabis waste – announced the licensing, effective for five years commencing August 23, 2019.

The license will be used to help further develop the world’s first waste treatment system that alters and denatures cannabis waste while recovering reusable water. As part of the licensing agreement the Company’s R&D team, led by Chief Technology Officer and Founder Dr. Bob Bhushan, say they plan to accelerate and expand the cannabis waste and wastewater programs, both through its industry-leading Cannavore™ waste processing system and through its developing facility wastewater management program at its state-of-the-art Micron Waste Innovation Centre in Delta, BC.

Dr. Bhushan commented on the licensing agreement and how Micron Waste’s compliancy technology will meet and exceed industry standards:

“The Micron R&D team is focused on the current and future needs of cannabis facilities seeking sustainable waste management, both solid and liquid. Accordingly, the Company is developing the most efficient, compliant management of green waste through our Cannavore digester technology. In addition, we are now expanding our wastewater treatment protocol to better assist licensed producers domestically and internationally to reclaim, reuse or compliantly discharge all facility wastewater generated in the cultivation of cannabis.”

Environmental Consulting Services

Further to Micron’s Cannavore™ solid waste management program, the Company is now positioned for core competency in overall cannabis facility wastewater management. Dr. Bhushan, who has over 20 years of experience in digestion science and wastewater treatment in Canada and internationally, will lead Micron’s cannabis facility wastewater mitigation consulting services. These valuable services will be offered to existing and planned cannabis facilities seeking to sustainably address both green waste and water management through the reclamation and purification of facility wastewater.

Disposal Regulations

Under the Cannabis Act, the federal government has legislated detailed regulations for all aspects of cannabis…from production to personal use to industrial disposal. In the US, requirements vary from state to state, and even among local jurisdictions within a state. They typically apply to larger, licensed growers – not to those allowed to grow a few plants for their personal use, or to ease medical conditions.

Most states, and Canada, require that the materials be held unaltered for three business days. This delay allows time for an inspection if there’s concern about how a grow operation is being managed.

Micron Waste’s system is an example of a newer aerobic option. It is designed for onsite installation, finely shreds cannabis waste, and combines it with a proprietary blend of microbes and enzymes in an aerobic chamber. It includes further treatment that cleans the liquid residue to a standard that enables sewer disposal or reuse. The tremendously tough, fibrous stems from the large cannabis plants in industrial operations must be ground very fine for the bacteria to process them quickly.

About the Cannavore™

The Cannavore was engineered based on proven technology used by the Company in its Organivore™ food waste system prototype, designed to process food waste on a commercial scale. The world’s first closed-loop cannabis waste processing system was designed to be a complete clean technology solution to process organic waste generated from the growth and cultivation of cannabis, at the same time mitigating concerns about the potential environmental impact.

Cannavore units have been awarded an Industrial Design Certificate of Registration from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), with USPTO protection in the US.

Micron Waste Chief Technology Officer Dr. Bob Bhushan (CNW Group/Micron Waste Technologies Inc.)

Micron’s waste management systems employ advanced computer science for remote real-time diagnostics monitoring and control. The mobile, comprehensive units – which do not emit odour – are engineered to operate onsite within a 40-foot shipping container, deployable on land or at sea, without need to truck, incinerate, or landfill methane-producing waste.

Micron currently has additional Cannavore systems under construction, working alongside strategic partner BC Research Inc. Micron’s food waste system prototype is currently being upgraded with new technology developed for the Cannavore.
