The price of gold has stepped onto centre stage, counteracting Trump’s bluster with an over 41 per cent year-over-year return as of February 28, outperforming the S&P 500’s 15.39 per cent and the TSX’s 18.29 per cent efforts. How will gold react in 2025 contingent on key price drivers?

By the ounce

At the time of writing on Tuesday, the price of gold sat at US$2,920.30 per ounce, up from US$2,918 in our Feb. 26 report, according to data from The Globe and Mail, with investors resorting to the safe-haven asset on the first day of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on Canada (10 per cent energy) and Mexico.

This week in gold

Sun Summit Minerals (TSXV:SMN) published an inaugural resource estimate for its 100-per-cent owned Buck project in central British Columbia, reaching over 800,000 ounces of gold equivalent indicated and inferred. The stock remains down by over 80 per cent since shifting its corporate focus in 2020, trading at a market capitalization of only C$9.9 million.

Attractive junior mining investments lack market recognition, despite de-risked paths to value creation supported by operational and macroeconomic data. Quebec-based LaFleur Minerals (CSE:LFLR), a gold explorer, developer and soon-to-be producer, is set up to win under this rubric.

Provenance Gold (CSE:PAU) looks to continue its outperformance after robust drilling results from its Eldorado project in Oregon. Highlights include 154 metres of 0.8 grams per ton of gold.
