Since the company began this environmental initiative in 2008, it has recycled more than 2.5 million pounds of telecommunications equipment, reused more than 28,700 items and resold more than 40,700 items.
"In the fast-paced telecommunications industry, we inevitably have to purchase new equipment for our extensive fiber network," said Bob Oldmixon, FairPoint director of supply chain management. "To reduce the impact on the environment, we can reuse equipment, purchase refurbished equipment, recycle old equipment and resell equipment we no longer use to other businesses in need."
FairPoint is recycling everything from electric motors, fiber optic cable, copper wire, insulated low grade wire and tin wire to hard drives, batteries, remote controls, LCD monitors, PC towers, printers, printer cartridges, fax machines, corded phones, old cell phones and payphones to wire in ceilings and floors, aluminum, stainless steel, packing material, pallets, cardboard, paper, wood spools and plastic.
In mid-2008, as part of its strong environmental focus, FairPoint chose Shields Environmental Inc., a leader in optimizing network assets for telecoms operators, to manage its recycle, reuse and resell program. Shields takes FairPoint's equipment, tests it and matches it with their clients who are looking to buy fully tested and warranted equipment. Shields' return rate on resold products is less than 2 percent.
