BAE Systems and Eye Street Solutions Develop Crowdsourcing Feature to Enhance FEMA's App

BA

BAE Systems and Eye Street Solutions, Inc., have launched an add-on feature to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) official mobile app that is designed to enhance situational awareness for citizens, first responders, emergency managers, and recovery teams during an emergency or following a disaster.

The app’s new Disaster Reporter feature allows users to upload photos and report important incident information from their smartphones. All data collected is pinpointed on an interactive map, thanks to the GPS technology within the user’s smartphone. The feature was developed alongside FEMA’s Digital Engagement team.

“Disasters affecting a large number of people spread across a wide geographical area present a significant challenge for emergency responders and community relief volunteers,” said DeEtte Gray, president of BAE Systems’ Intelligence & Security sector. “Crowdsourcing enables FEMA to quickly provide real-time images and intelligence to the people who need it to make decisions on when and where to deploy resources.”

The Disaster Reporter feature was first utilized by FEMA as it coordinated its response to the deadly and destructive September flooding disaster in Colorado.

BAE Systems and Eye Street Solutions worked with FEMA’s Digital Engagement team to launch the first release of FEMA's smartphone app for mobile devices in October 2011. The FEMA App contains disaster safety tips, an interactive emergency kit list, emergency meeting location information, and a map to locate open shelters and FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers. The Disaster Reporter feature expands on the base platform.

The Disaster Reporter feature is currently available for the Android and iOS versions of the FEMA app.
