IOCOM's Visimeet to Be Used in University of Birmingham's EMBO Conference by Attendees Around the World

BIOGY

Visimeet Will Enable Individuals From Around the World to Remotely Join the EMBO Conference "The Mighty Daphnia: Past, Present, and Future" January 19-22

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - January 06, 2014) -  IOCOM, a leading worldwide provider of universal video conferencing solutions, will provide broadcast capabilities via its award-winning conferencing software, Visimeet, during this month's EMBO Conference "The Mighty Daphnia: Past, Present, and Future." The conference, organized by the International Daphnia Genomics Consortium, will include a live audience, many of which will view the conference remotely using Visimeet. The remote audience is to include participants as far away as Shenzhen, China.

John Colbourne, Professor of Environmental Genomics at the University of Birmingham, states, "Visimeet has been selected as the broadcasting solution for the EMBO Conference because of its flexibility, ability to transmit a variety of data sources to a large audience, and for its ability to allow for collaboration with teams around the world." John is a founding member of the Daphnia Consortium, which aims to better understand how natural populations and ecosystems cope and adapt to increasing stress on the environment, such as pollution and climate change. To John, whose work is often limited by costs and the need to share data and interact with experts around the world, "The ability to work with anyone at any time without limits is vital, Visimeet allows that."

The conference will take place at the University of Birmingham, UK January 19-22, 2014 and will focus on ecological and evolutionary research using the aquatic model species Daphnia, commonly known as the waterflea. Naturalists and scientists have been fascinated by Daphnia since the 17th century. It is now a modern genomic model species for interdisciplinary research and will be heavily explored during the four-day conference with special attention to new avenues of research made available by having access to technologies that allow the study how different environmental conditions change the functions of genes and their products. Genomics is the simultaneous study of all of the genes found in organisms, including humans.

During the conference, there will be a live audience in the Bramall Music Building at the University, and include partners from a research institute in China attending via Visimeet, as well as by remote attendees from around the world who will receive audio and video, with the ability to also send messages, questions and comments. A variety of data will be shared using Visimeet's data sharing capabilities.

About the Daphnia Genomics Consortium

The Daphnia Genomics Consortium (DGC) is an international network of investigators committed to mounting the freshwater crustacean Daphnia as a model system for ecology, evolution and the environmental sciences. It was founded in 2002 with the explicit goal "to develop the Daphnia system to the same depth of molecular, cell and developmental biological understanding as other model systems, but with the added advantage of being able to interpret observations in the context of natural environmental challenges." Nearly 100 research papers have resulted from the DGC's collaborative research and training model, including furthering the applications from these findings to modernize methods of monitoring and protecting environmental health. http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/biosciences/conferences/dgc/index.aspx

Founded in 1998, IOCOM develops, markets, and supports enterprise video conferencing and collaboration software and solutions that enable multi-point communication for business processes. IOCOM delivers innovative on-premise and cloud-based solutions that enable multiple groups or individuals to instantly collaborate anytime and anywhere over their chosen medium.
