- Significant damage in some areas affects outage duration - Duke Energy is grateful for customers' patience during restoration efforts

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- This afternoon, Duke Energy reported nearly 68,700 outages as crews continue working to restore remaining outages across the Carolinas.

"This storm caused extensive damage in several parts of our service area," said Jeff Corbett, senior vice president of Duke Energy's Carolina Delivery Operations. "Work at these sites involves tree clearing, pole replacements, restringing power lines and replacing transformers and other equipment, which takes considerable time."

Duke Energy has 3,900 field workers making repairs. As crews complete work in one area, they are moved to support restoration in another area.

To access specific outage numbers for your region, visit www.duke-energy.com/storms. Select your local utility from the following options on the site:

  • Duke Energy Progress – Serving eastern N.C., eastern S.C. and Asheville, N.C.
  • Duke Energy Carolinas – Serving the Piedmont area of N.C. and Upstate S.C.

Duke Energy continues to update estimated times of restoration (ETR) information for customer accounts in its automated outage system. Customers experiencing a power outage are encouraged to call Duke Energy to report the outage and for updated information.

The ETRs indicate when the majority of outages in specific locations are anticipated to be restored. Many customers will have service sooner than the estimated times. There may be scattered outages beyond these times depending on individual cases.

  • Duke Energy Carolinas: 1-800-POWERON (1-800-769-3766)
  • Duke Energy Progress: 1-800-419-6356
  • Spanish-speaking customers can call: 1-866-4APAGON

As a reminder, stay away from power lines that have fallen or are sagging. Consider all lines energized as well as trees or limbs in contact with lines. The company also asks that individuals do not interact with its workers, which can slow the restoration process and place both the individual and worker in danger.
