NEW YORK, Aug. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc., (NYSE: NEE) today announced a plan to offset the environmental impacts of electricity used at Citi Field for the next three years. An affiliate of NextEra Energy Resources is matching 100 percent of the electricity used to power Citi Field through June 2016, with 58,500 renewable energy certificates (REC).
"We are thrilled to once again partner with NextEra Energy Resources in our continued effort to have Citi Field remain one of the nation's most sustainable ballparks," said New York Mets Senior Vice President, Venue Services and Operations Mike Landeen. "As an open-air stadium leader, we are proud to strive for excellence in regard to an important initiative such as sustainability."
The RECs being supplied are Green-e certified. Green-e is a program of the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions that guarantees both environmental integrity and consumer protection. RECs represent all the environmental attributes of electricity production at projects that use renewable energy sources. For every megawatt-hour of renewable energy production, a REC is created.
"We are excited to be partnering with Queens Ballpark Company to help them meet their renewable energy goals," said Rick Anderson, senior director, Business Development for NextEra Energy Resources. "This is a significant initiative for all those involved with Citi Field and we are glad to be a part of it."
