Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ:RVBD), the leader in application performance
infrastructure, today announced that Australia’s The
GPT Group has deployed Riverbed®
SteelHead™ CX for Cloud, part of the Riverbed Application
Performance Platform™, in order to maintain a high level of network and
application performance after migrating 99% of its applications from a
private, on-premise data center to a public cloud environment. With
SteelHead CX for Cloud, GPT Group has seen an 80% reduction in network
traffic, allowing the company to reduce bandwidth requirements across
its network connections.

application performance for Australia’s @TheGPTGroup: http://rvbd.ly/1Ezrv99
The GPT Group is one of Australia’s largest diversified property groups,
with 26 locations and more than 500 staff across the country. The
organization has more than 38,000 investors and is one of Australia's
largest diversified listed property groups with a market capitalization
of more than $6 billion.
Originally, GPT Group had been using Riverbed SteelHead in its data
center and remote locations to guarantee consistent application
performance across the organization’s 26 sites in Victoria, New South
Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. For cost benefits and
agility, GPT Group migrated its entire data center to a public cloud –
all but a single server running a property management system that can’t
be virtualized.
“The critical success factor of our cloud migration was that performance
had to be as good, if not better than where we were previously. We
achieved that with Riverbed,” said Michael Lockhart, IT Infrastructure
Manager at GPT Group. “Riverbed remained a natural fit to achieve
superior application performance. The biggest question for us was how we
architected the new environment and this is where the discussion came up
as to whether we should look at cloud SteelHead options.”
GPT Group’s current infrastructure environment consists of symmetrical
SteelHead CX for Cloud deployments – one in each of the cloud provider’s
two Sydney data centers and physical SteelHead appliances at each of GPT
Group’s 26 sites. By choosing to deploy Riverbed SteelHead CX for Cloud,
GPT Group is able to meet application performance service level
agreements (SLAs) regardless of network latency or bandwidth limitations.
“We see a 5:1 ratio on our optimization so we’re generally able to scale
down network connection sizes because of the level of reduction that we
get from having the SteelHeads,” said Lockhart. “We’re getting
performance that would typically require a much bigger link. A standard
site for us is only on a 4MB link but with the 5:1 optimization ratio,
we’re getting the equivalent of up to a 20MB link at the same cost.”
