A comprehensive look at the company's social, environmental and financial performance, the ninth edition of the Sustainability Report outlines a number of challenges and goals for the nation's largest electric utility.

For nine straight years, Duke Energy has been a part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America – putting it among the most sustainable companies on the continent.
The report provides an overview and data on how Duke Energy creates value. It details the company's performance in its four key focus areas – customers, growth, operations and employees. A number of employees are highlighted for their contributions to Duke Energy's sustainability efforts.
The report also tracks the company's progress on its current sustainability goals and programs. Some highlights:
- Duke Energy continues to have electric rates – for residential, commercial and industrial customers – below the national average in all states it serves.
- The company has given customers nearly 61 million energy-efficient light bulbs in recent years. That's enough energy saved to power nearly 192,000 homes.
- About 71 percent of the company's U.S. solid waste is recycled. That's better than last year's mark of 69 percent – heading toward a 2018 goal of 80 percent.
- The company owns and purchases more than 3,000 megawatts of wind, solar and biomass – heading toward a goal of 6,000 megawatts by 2020. Duke Energy's overall generating capacity is about 60,000 megawatts.
