The Normal Aircraft Tracking Implementation Initiative (NATII) - Communication and Aircraft Tracking Service Provider Workshop on April 30 and May 1, 2015 is a part of the ongoing development of the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS). GADSS is the direct result of industry and regulatory concerns about the current inability to track commercial aircraft anywhere in the World, as demonstrated by the loss of MH370.
Star's participation in the NATII aircraft tracking workshop was valuable as it offered the opportunity to compare Star's technology with both other possible solutions and with ICAO driven initiatives and guidance.
The current ICAO timelines for aircraft tracking compliance are as follows:
- 2016: Normal Aircraft tracking every 15 minutes - normal operations
- 2017: Abnormal Aircraft tracking every minute - abnormal operations
- 2018: Autonomous Distress Tracking
- 2020: Flight Data Recorder downloads in case of a catastrophic event
ICAO initiatives include a minimum set of situations which should be detected:
- "unusual attitude" such as excessive roll value or excessive pitch value or yaw rate or combination of roll/pitch value and roll/pitch rate.
- "unusual speed" conditions
- "unusual Altitude"
- "total loss of thrust/propulsion" on all engines.
Notice to the airline of the occurrence of any of these situations, while the aircraft is in flight, is only a part of information provided by the Star-A.D.S.™ system and is available to Star customers as a one stop solution.
