TORONTO, May 12, 2015 /CNW/ - Equity Financial Holdings Inc. • Mortgage originations of $28,676, up 50% over the prior quarter and up 13% year over year

  • Net interest margin of 3.07%
  • Net interest income of $2,496, down 28% year over year due to decline in size of loan book
  • Net loss of $260, due primarily to decline in net interest income
  • Basic loss per share of $0.03
  • Regulatory capital of $85,351 as at March 31, 2015
  • Book value per share of $9.95 as at March 31, 2015

Equity Financial Holdings CEO Michael R. Jones said,

"In the first quarter of 2015 our mortgage originations increased 50% compared to the previous quarter, demonstrating our improving capacity to originate new loans and our mortgage loan portfolio stabilized after a period of decline that began in early 2014.  Over the past year, we have completed a rebuilding process that has included changes at the Board and CEO level, the establishment of a new senior management team, the creation of a sales and marketing team and significant improvements to our underwriting and risk management infrastructure. During the past twelve months, Equity Trust has maintained a strong base of regulatory capital and liquidity and we have continued to generate net interest and fee income from our mortgage loan portfolio.

After achieving the stabilization of our loan book in the first quarter, management remains focused on strengthening our mortgage processing capabilities, including expanding our new distribution arrangements with key mortgage broker relationships, evaluating technology solutions to further build scalability, enhancing our risk management infrastructure and refining our corporate governance practices.  We continue to expect mortgage loan book growth to be modest in the first half of 2015 with momentum created as we move into the second half of the fiscal year.  Correspondingly, income at or near the break-even level is expected while we focus on growing our mortgage loan book."

Stephen J. Griggs, Chair of the Board added,

"We have recently appointed Peter Friedmann to the Board of Equity Trust.  Mr. Friedmann is an independent director with a wealth of mortgage industry experience that includes over thirty years as a senior executive at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.  Mr. Friedmann will also stand for election to the Board of Equity Financial Holdings at our Annual General Meeting on May 28, 2015."
