VANCOUVER, June 15, 2015 /CNW/ - More Aboriginal children in communities across Canada will now be able to access an expanded Aboriginal Summer Literacy Camps program, thanks to a landmark $2.5 million donation made by TD Bank Group to Frontier College at an event today in East Vancouver. The gift was announced by Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group and Wayne Gretzky, TD's Brand Ambassador.

TD's donation represents it long-standing commitment to supporting children's literacy initiatives and is one of the many ways TD is strengthening the communities in which we live and work. Today's gift to Frontier College is one of the largest community donations TD has made to date to a single organization and is the largest in support of youth literacy and the Aboriginal community.

"I'm passionate about literacy and I've advocated for it to become a national priority, with greater investment in making sure our youth today and future generations have the skills they need to keep Canada prosperous," said Frank McKenna, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group. "I am proud TD has chosen to help Frontier College expand its highly successful Summer Literacy Camps program because we know kids want to read and this program gives them a better opportunity to do so."

"Frontier College is grateful for the significant commitment from TD to the First Nations, Métis and Inuit children participating in the Summer Literacy Camps. This support means more children can build their literacy and numeracy skills over the summer months, while engaging in traditional community-based activities, preparing them for the school year," said Sherry Campbell, President and CEO, Frontier College.

TD's long-term partnership with Frontier College goes back more than 30 years, representing a total contribution of more than $4 million. TD began supporting the Summer Literacy Camps program for the first time in 2011. Today's gift will expand the program so it will be available in 110 First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities from coast to coast to coast this summer.
