Capacity Latam 2016 is the largest annual gathering of wholesale telecommunications service providers, carriers, vendors, subsea-cable and satellite companies in Latin American. The conference is expected to draw more than 500 industry leaders from over 150 companies.

Michael Wheeler, executive vice president of NTT Communications Global IP Network at NTT America, will participate in the conference’s keynote panel “Laying the Foundation – Building the Necessary Steps to Encourage Future Investments in the Latin American Region” on Tuesday, March 15th, 9:35am local time.

“We have seen consistent progress in the telecommunications sector across Latin America and we expect it to continue this year,” says Mr. Wheeler on the topic of the panel. “There needs to be a concerted effort among governments, operators, regulatory entities, equipment manufacturers and other involved parties to maintain a stable environment that encourages investments, drives innovation and improves services for businesses and consumers,” he adds.

A major trend for the Latin American market continues to be the growth in broadband access despite uncertain economic conditions. Mr. Wheeler said in an interview with Capacity magazine that this growth is fuelled by the continued modernization of the infrastructure which in turn spurs increased demand.

NTT Com is ideally positioned to cater for this growth. “NTT Com has the high-capacity infrastructure as well as the global reach, financial resources and industry expertise to help meet this growing demand for IP access in the region,” says Mr. Wheeler.

Even before establishing a Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Sao Paulo in 2011, NTT Com has been actively working with regional Latin American providers of Internet services (ISPs), content (ICPs) and Internet-centric businesses offering best-in-class connectivity to international markets through its leading Tier-1 Global IP Network.

Brazil’s communications infrastructure will be tested again this year with the upcoming Olympic Games. “The 2014 World Cup generated unprecedented volumes of data and video content and these Games are expected to even surpass those record numbers,” Mr. Wheeler anticipates. “The role of international carriers will once again be crucial in helping to meet this event’s connectivity needs. As the world will be watching, there can be no compromise in quality and reliability,” he concludes.
