FairPoint Communications Continues Network Upgrades in 13 towns in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine, July 28, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- FairPoint Communications1 announced today that it continues to invest in its network by upgrading technology at Central Offices located in the Maine towns of Brownville, Bucksport, Columbia, Danforth, Dixfield, Frenchville, Guilford, Lubec, Madison, Monson, Skowhegan, Waldoboro and Wells. These upgrades mean FairPoint now delivers faster broadband speeds to more than 32,450 locations in these towns.

“Today’s announcement of faster broadband speeds in these communities is terrific news,” said Maine Governor Paul LePage. “In today’s world, broadband plays a crucial role in our state’s ability to attract and retain businesses and residents.”

“We continue to take the lead in bringing broadband to Mainers who have little or no high-speed access while boosting capacity and speed in areas where demand is especially strong,” said Mike Reed, Maine state president for FairPoint. “With our investment in our network and miles of new fiber in Maine, FairPoint is expanding the reach of next-generation technology throughout the Pine Tree State.”

A Central Office is a physical building typically located in the center of town and houses the telecommunications equipment needed to deliver broadband service to residents and businesses. The upgrade brings a range of high-speed Internet options to these communities and depending on the customer’s distance from the upgraded Central Office, some can qualify for up to 25 Mbps download speed.2

Since 2014, FairPoint has upgraded 46 Central Offices bringing high-speed Internet to more than 65,400 locations throughout Maine. FairPoint has also invested more than $900 million in its northern New England communications infrastructure and technology since April 2008 enabling the company to reach new customers, upgrade its network and expand Internet access. FairPoint’s network – with approximately 17,000 miles of fiber in northern New England – is the largest in the region.
