Worst Performing Industries For August 18, 2016

The Dow rose 0.08 percent to 18,588.73, while the NASDAQ composite index gained 0.21 percent to 5,239.43. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 0.14 percent to 2,185.23.

The worst performing industries in the market today are:

  • Communication Equipment: This industry slipped 0.8 percent by 11:00 am. The worst stock within the industry was Communications Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JCS), which fell 8 percent. Communications Systems has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.04 per share and increased its line of credit from $10 million to $15 million.
  • Residential Construction: This industry declined 0.6 percent by 11:00 am with New Home Company Inc (NASDAQ: NWHM) moving down 0.5 percent. New Home Company shares have declined 34.51 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 4.07 percent in the same period.
  • Telecom Services - Domestic: This industry fell 0.6 percent by 11:00 am ET. FairPoint Communications Inc (NASDAQ: FRP) shares dropped 1 percent in today's trading. FairPoint Communications shares have dropped 23.91 percent over the past 52 weeks, while the S&P 500 index has gained 4.07 percent in the same period.
  • Toys & Games: The industry dropped 0.5 percent by 11:00 am. The worst performer in this industry was Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT), which declined 0.7 percent.
