Rogers Square offers outdoor hub for community and business events at the Nova Centre

Public invited to free grand opening activities on Saturday, May 18

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, May 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rogers Square, a new outdoor community space at the Nova Centre, officially opened today in the heart of the downtown core. Rogers Square is a covered open-air hub for concerts, festivals, markets, sports viewing parties, business events, city events and more.  Residential and business customers can also access a state-of-the-art Rogers retail store from inside Rogers Square.

“We are proud to be an important part of the fabric of the Halifax community and to provide a versatile, downtown outdoor space that will benefit visitors and residents to the Nova Centre,” said Tom Turner, Senior Vice-President, Corporate and Commercial Sales, Rogers.  “At Rogers, we believe in connecting Canadians to what matters most in their lives, and with our future 5G network, we are going to transform the way people and businesses in Atlantic Canada connect to each other and the world.”

At a media event hosted by Griff and Caroline in the Morning from JACK 92.9, Rogers officials were joined by the Nova Centre, three levels of government and members of the local business community.

"Halifax is the place to be. Everywhere you look, our city is taking off. Now, that includes Rogers Square in the heart of our downtown, a place where Haligonians and visitors alike will come together to connect,” said Andy Fillmore, MP for Halifax.

“Hosting events delivers significant economic and social opportunities for our province,” said Minister Lena Metlege Diab on behalf of Premier Stephen McNeil. “This new outdoor community space in the heart of Halifax’s downtown core will attract events to the city and contribute to a stronger, richer and more vibrant community.”

“Halifax is a hub of innovation, technology and creativity in Atlantic Canada and we are so pleased that Rogers is investing in our city through its partnership with the Nova Centre and by opening Rogers Square for all residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Mike Savage, Mayor of Halifax.

Rogers Square is housed in the middle of the Nova Centre, Atlantic Canada’s most technologically-connected commercial building, and can hold more than two thousand people at a time. It is available for organizations and community groups wishing to use the space on its own or as an extension of activities hosted inside the building. This is one of the first steps for Rogers in helping build better, smarter cities and creating new opportunities for municipalities and the people they serve.

“Rogers Square is a beautiful addition to the Nova Centre, which brings our tenants and the wider Halifax community together in this urban centrepiece,” said Joe Ramia, Rank Realty, Nova Centre. “Rogers has been a valued technology partner throughout the inception of this complex by providing thousands of kilometers of fibre throughout the building, free Wi-Fi for visitors, a centralized retail store and now Rogers Square.”

To celebrate the grand opening and in time for the Memorial Cup airing on Sportsnet, the public is invited to free hockey-themed activities at Rogers Square on Saturday, May 18 from 10 am to 7pm. JACK 92.9 will provide live onsite programming throughout the day and local restaurants like the Gahan House will be onsite. People are invited to visit the new Rogers store throughout the day and there is an exclusive limited time grand opening offer for customers. NHL alumni Darcy Tucker and Shayne Corson will be inside the Rogers store from 1:30 to 3 p.m. signing autographs. There will also be lots of prizes and giveaways for those visiting Rogers Square.

Today’s announcement follows a recent Rogers investment in wireless enhancements in parts of Nova Scotia and its 2017 technology partnership announcement with the Nova Centre.

To book Rogers Square for an event, please contact the Nova Centre.
