BlackBerry (TSX:BB) has officially launched QNX Sound, an audio and acoustics platform for vehicle hardware.
In a news release, the Waterloo, Ont.-based company said QNX Sound will offer innovation in audio-based entertainment as well as comfort and safety features.
Notably, the platform will enable automakers to blend all audio and acoustic functions within the main software stack of a vehicle’s software-defined architecture.
“QNX Sound is the ultimate digital audio platform for the automotive industry and the most comprehensive foundation available for innovation,” John Wall, senior vice president and head of QNX at BlackBerry, said in a statement. “Through it, we enable automakers to explore new business opportunities and exciting collaborations that will truly appeal to and excite the end user.”
BlackBerry stated the QNX Sound software will also provide more control over quality and functionality in addition to advanced tuning tools with a graphical programming interface that provides signal processing creativity.
As it currently stands, QNX Sound is the only software-defined audio and acoustics solution for the automotive industry that has been tested in production and pre-integrated in next-generation System on Chip (SoCs).
QNX Sound is also pre-integrated with BlackBerry’s QNX Real Time Operating System (RTOS) and QNX Hypervisor.
Also on Monday, BlackBerry announced general availability of its new QNX Software Development Platform 8.0. “Combined with the next generation QNX OS 8.0, the platform delivers a scalable, high-performance real-time operating system available for today’s embedded computing industry,” the company’s news release stated.
BlackBerry provides intelligent security software and services to enterprises and governments around the world and secures over 500 million endpoints including over 235 million vehicles.
Shares of BlackBerry are up 0.46 per cent to C$4.37 as of 11:26 am ET.
