Top guns in gold, silver

TORONTO – A coven of gold and silver stocks is outpacing the pack.

In our Ticker Trax roster of 12 Planetary Prospects, top guns as precious metals notch gains this week include South Africa-Nevada gold producer Great Basin Gold (AMEX: GBG, Stock Forum) and (TSX: T.GBG, Stock Forum), Mexico and Peruvian gold-silver prospector Candente Gold (TSX: T.CDG, Stock Forum) and Mexico producer and prospector Endeavour Silver (AMEX: EXK, Stock Forum) and (TSX: T.EDR, Stock Forum).

Only one of the three, Joanne Freeze’s Candente Gold, is a fresh name in Canada. Candente Gold’s prospects in Mexico and Peru were the subject of three special Ticker Trax on-site reports in April and May. (Please view one of the subscriber reports here – for free.)

Click to enlargeThe recent driver for Candente Gold is its intended stock listing in Lima, Peru. Sister company Candente Copper (TSX: T.DNT, Stock Forum) is listed on the so-called BVL exchange in Lima and counts some fifth of its shareholders in the South America nation. Peruvians (and Colombians for that matter) have few choices when seeking locally traded natural-resources companies.

CEO and geologist Joanne Freeze tells me that when Candente Copper listed in Lima several years ago, almost $10 million worth of shares changed hands there the first week. Candente Gold’s EL Oro project near Mexico City sits 3,000 meters high on an arid plain dotted with the history of early 1900s mines such as Las Dos Estrellas. TheVeta Verde put out at least eight million ounces of gold equivalent from just two of 50 established veins. EL Oro exploratory drilling is now in its second month (Please see photo – Thom Calandra).

Our Ticker Trax take on Candente Gold: I was just as impressed with the Peru gold properties as the seemingly monstrous project in Mexico. Still, Mexico’s epithermal vein systems (San Rafael is the name of Candente’s down there) are capable of stunning levels of gold relative to the silver. These, Candente Gold director and doctor of geology Peter Megaw tells me, include deposits at Fresnillo, Pinos Altos and … in the case of Endeavour Silver, Guanajuato.

Endeavour Silver’s shares in Toronto and in New York are outpacing most silver stocks this week after the Canadian company said its Bolanitos Mine in Guanajuato State shows a vein intercept of what appears to be an average grade of 170 grams of silver and 2.14 grams of gold per metric ton across 9.88 meters.

John Adams and his clan: John Adams of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and his family (three strapping 20-something boys, his wife, lots of ranch hands and doggies), plus a key partner or two, including Rich Munson, are the homegrown folks who started Sandspring Resources (TSX: V.SSP, Stock Forum) and its Toroparu gold and copper project in British Guyana seven years ago. I was at the project in autumn 2009.

In a three-hour meeting and dinner in San Francisco this week, I am as convinced today as I was eight months ago when I visited the project that this Guyana gold and copper deposit could become an extension of Kilometer 88 in nearby Venezuela.

In Ticker Trax this week, we declared Sandspring shares a speculative purchase. The company’s shares have traded in Canada only since November. Four or more gold companies have visited the project in recent months. I have learned via our network that several asset managers, one of great size, are lining up to purchase shares in the fresh gold name.

The investor audience this past spring has been hesitant about the Sandspring resource. The approximately $100 million market cap of the company might be “running ahead” of a project with a compliant estimate of “just” 2.8 million ounces of gold … and accompanying copper.

My take, having seen the chalcopyrite and other ‘open-pittable’ indicators of Toroparu, is that we will see some revelatory assays from John Adams’ Sandspring in coming months. Visible (as in free) gold? Possibly. I also see a faint chance that the handfuls of pebble-sized diamonds retrieved across the vast property might become a bookable asset.

Largely, though, it is a gold streak of mineralized visibility, possibly in the northern part of Toroparu, which could send these $1.40 Canadian shares to levels above $5 almost overnight. I intend to purchase shares as soon as Friday. That is today. (Indeed, Friday morning I purchased 3,000 shares of Sandspring, making me a first-time shareholder of the company. Sandspring has yet to be named a Planetary Prospectof Ticker Trax.)
