Microsoft is working on a platform that will use blockchain technology to store and process digital identity data to use in decentralized systems.

In a news statement released this week, the Company announced that it is working with the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF) to build the software. It will allow users to access their private data from a secure hub, rather than have the data spared across numerous providers. Ankur Patel from Microsoft’s Identity Division states the company’s userbase is made up of billions of people.

Microsoft will be experimenting with Decentralized Identities on their existing Authenticator App. Identity data will be stored in an off-chain hub that Microsoft can’t see and will be encrypted with cryptographic keys.

The Government of Canada is also working on identity software to streamline the flow of travellers in and out of the country.
