Scotia Capital says an acid spill at Southern Copper Corp.’s (NYSE: SCCO, Stock Forum) Buenavista mine in Mexico may pose some risks to near-term production.

According to a press release by Mexico’s Environmental Protection Agency, PROFEPA, a 40,000 cubic metre acid spill at Buenavista has affected the Bacanuchi and Sonora Rivers.

PROFEPA has started an investigation that may result in potential sanctions against the company, Scotia Capital said in its report.

Southern Copper shares were up 0.84% to $32.35 Tuesday, leaving a market cap of $26.7 billion, based on 832.3 million shares outstanding. The 52-week range is $33.90 and $24.50.
