SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entropic (Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected home, today announced its Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA®) silicon, the EN2510, powers the Actiontec WCB3000, the latest MoCA-to-Wi-Fi® network adapter in Actiontec's Whole Home Wireless portfolio. The new device will be on display this week at the IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam at the RAI Convention Center, September 13-17, 2013, at Entropic's Meeting Suite in Hall 13 – Suite G106/G017.
According to Actiontec's Spring 2013 Connected Home study on U.S. domestic Wi-Fi habits, 72 percent of the 1200 respondents reported at least one wireless problem or deficiency in their wireless Internet, and 67 percent experienced Wi-Fi dropouts while checking e-mail. As whole-home multiscreen use increases, current Wi-Fi networks will become increasingly insufficient in the face of rising bandwidth and coverage demands.
The new Actiontec WCB3000 solves Wi-Fi coverage problems by using Entropic's MoCA technology to reliably extend the Wi-Fi signal to more places in the home—distributing broadband coverage over the home's existing coax wiring.
The solution employs a MoCA network backbone to eliminate unpredictable Wi-Fi coverage that can occur when the in-home wireless signal is blocked by physical structures in the home (i.e. walls, multiple floors) and/or interference from other equipment (i.e. cordless phones, microwave ovens). By connecting the Actiontec WCB3000 to the wired MoCA backbone, consumers can add a Wi-Fi Access Point into an area where Wi-Fi connectivity is sporadic, low, or non-existent, or where they wish to improve Wi-Fi connectivity for high-bandwidth applications like video streaming.
Simply stated, by using a wired MoCA connection, the WCB3000 can deliver stronger signals, faster speeds, and better coverage compared to wireless extenders that do not use a wired connection.
"Actiontec's WCB3000 uses proven MoCA technology from Entropic to address the increasingly relevant challenge of whole home wireless coverage," said Brian Henrichs, chief business development officer at Actiontec Electronics. "WCB3000 is one of the ways that Actiontec is bringing Wi-Fi to more places in the home, enabling consumers to enjoy their favorite content on their favorite device, wherever they want. We're working with Entropic to ensure that these Wi-Fi experiences are powered by robust and reliable MoCA technology to maximize wireless freedom in the home."
"Consumers should be able to stream movies, surf the web and enjoy online gaming without buffering, dropped signals or packet-loss," said Al Servati, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. "Actiontec's advanced WCB3000 incorporating our EN2510 MoCA chip empowers a new generation of devices to ensure subscribers can go beyond 'best effort' wireless coverage to reliably enjoy entertainment services in all corners of their home."
