I expect a stock to justify itself with earnings as well. As near as I can figure, going 4 quarters forward Yamana will make about 28c/share for the year, or a P/E of about 46.
I quite agree with what you said about the tech stocks, but then, if you look at how well this whole Net Asset Values and Cash Flow thing has worked, well, isn't a big chunk of the gold market down by about 25% now? So it seems it has been experiencing a gradual decline to common sense rather then a perilous drop off...
And even more interesting, if you look way back, to before 2000, gold stocks were trading on far more reasonable P/Es.
