There are many people who say short selling should be made illegal, but those people aren't rich and have no political clout, they're more often the victims of the hedge funds and other market manipulators who profit from shorting and manipulating. Average retail investors get screwed over and over, just like the middle class. Politicians no longer have any power, the wealthy can get their own candidates elected. Basically the average, middle-class investor is screwed, and all we can hope for is a few crumbs that fall off the table where the rich are stuffing their faces.
