I couldn't agree with you more.  But Obama's attitude toward Dirty Coal and so-called Dirty Oil (oil sands) still rules the day.  Keystone is still not a reality and coal mines are closing everywhere.  It's a wonder the gas fracking business business ever got going.  But without his "help" the US is still on its way to self-sufficiency which is a good thing for the stability of the world.  Where's his solar power renaissance to rescue us from fossil fuels?  Barely surviving or bankrupt.  That's where.  I believe alternative energy will have its day in the sun eventually but solar, along with wind, geothermal, hydrogen, cold fusion...whatever...will have to bide their time for at least another 20 to 30 years.  Like everything else it will be a slow and gradual encroachment on the the fossil fuel market based mainly on economic factors.  In the meantime, the Republicans can help save us (the West) from becoming weaker economically than we already are.  But can they?  Obama is still lurking around for another two years.  As President, will he still be able to throw roadblocks for the of the Republicans in Congress and the Senate?
