"As long as CEC can mine responsibly then what is the problem? "

For me, it has nothing to do with the mining in general. (which is why I'm not against 'mining', this is a board about Raven Coal mine, not all mines).

The issues are too big picture now. There is no such thing as "responsible coal mining" anymore. Just as there is no such thing as "responsible asbestos mining", or "responsible drunk driving".

The costs to society and the planet are too great now to allow more thermal coal mines or of marginal metallurgical quality like Raven to move forward. We don't need it, and we allowing it simply allows the addiction to continue.

I'm an amateur weather enthusiast. Today I've been watching discussion on a storm system affecting the Arctic right now that is ripping up the already record-low sea ice area in the central Arctic. This storm is according to the US National Weather Service:
(They put out their advisories in All CAPS so this is not 'yelling' in the Internet sense)

"AN UNUSUALLY DEEP LOW FOR ANY TIME OF THE YEAR IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN"

"A LOW THIS DEEP IN AUGUST IS INDEED A RARE EVENT."

" EXCEPTIONALLY DEEP...PARTICULARLY FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR..."

Mining can be done responsibly.

But with events that are now happening, that have been both been predicted to happen in the past by all climate models, and are now shown by NASA that statistically only human-industry CO2 emissions could cause them....

Coal, in my opinion, is no longer a responsible source of energy. Therefore Raven, is not a responsible project.
