Xinhua reported that the volume of China coal imports more thantripled in 2009 from a year earlier as the country's economic stimuluspackage boosted demand.
The General Administration of Customs said China coal imports jumped2.1 fold to 130 million tonnes in 2009 from a year earlier, with theaverage price being USD 84 per tonne.
GAC attributed the surge to higher domestic coal prices and a supplyshortage caused by the increase in demand after the economic stimuluspackage came into effect, which pushed up demand for high-qualitycoking coal in the steel, cement and chemical industries.
GAC said domestic coal prices rose higher in fall and winter, boostedby increasing demand for heating. The country coal exports stood at22.4 million tonnes last year down by 50.7%YoY. The exports totaled USD2.38 billion in value down by 54.7%YoY.
