They should have taken a closer look at Mr. Ellis' resume.   Didn't Pike River have a series of methane explosions that killed 29 workers in 2010?  Aren't they facing 21 charges of labour code violations?  Rio Tinto's Kestral Mine?  Lay offs due to increased costs and low prices for coal?  This is Compliance Coals new VP of operations?   ...more

You seem to be implying that Steve Ellis was somehow incompetent in his past role 2girlz.   At least that is how I'm reading your post.  Is that what you think of Mr. Ellis?   Do you know who was responsible for the Pike River mine explosion?  How did Mr. Ellis handle the situation?  Are you implying that he wasn't professional in the way he handled things?    ...more

I am not implying that Mr. Ellis is incompetent.  Perhaps you can tell me how Mr. Ellis handled the situation at Pike River before, during and after the explosion.  Have they recovered the bodies yet?  I just don't think this is good PR for Raven.  It does not make me feel confident that profit is attainable without sacrificing the environment and/or worker safety ...more

2girlz, Mr. Ellis was hired by PRC as Operations Manager approx. 8 weeks prior to the methane explosion. I believe the Royal Commission that handled the enquiry concluded, with the assistance of Solid Energy who later bought the mine, that the methane explosion was likely caused by the method of mining used to extract the coal, Hydro-Mining. Mr Ellis was co-operative with the Commission from the ...more

I guess I'm not the only one who thinks its a bit odd to hire someone with this background. I wonder what the folks in NZ think about this since the bodies of the miners have not yet been recovered. How would you feel 2guys, if it were someone in your family buried in that mine? I know, I know - its just about the money. Its not really about jobs or the people who risk their lives or the ...more

You said, "Be very, very careful about investing in a mine that has no social license to proceed."   What is a "social license to proceed"? BGT

You can google the answer to that.  Its pretty obvious.  It has to do with acceptance and approval of the community.  Please don't play dumb.

Why don't we let people make up their own mind about the Pike River explosion. I am aware that Mr. Ellis was hired eight weeks prior to the methane explosion but I am not at all sure about the statements that followed your comment. I thought it was an inadequate electrical system that ignited the methane. I sure wouldn't want to make my money by risking the lives of the poor and desperate  ...more

I'm not playing dumb - I was just asking you to clarify what you mean. Community has more than one meaning.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CommunityThe term community has two distinct commutive meanings: 1) Community usually refers to a social unit larger than a small village that shares common values. The term can also refer to the national community or international community, and, 2) in ...more
