China overtakes Italy
CHINA‘S continuing economic growth has placed the country higher
than Italy in world economic rankings, according to Chinese
government figures. In a preliminary forecast, the State Statistical
Bureau said China enjoyed a 7.3 per cent rise in economic output for
2001. The growth contrasts with that recorded by many other Asian
countries, including recession-hit Singapore which revealed its
economic output shrank 2.2 per cent. Japan has also entered
recession, while Hong Kong and Taiwan are both on the brink of
reporting economic contraction. China’s rise confirms its place on the
world economic stage, with financial information group Bloomberg
predicting the country has overtaken Italy and is challenging France in
global rankings.
