A Halifax company that makes energy-efficient lighting has won what it thinks may be the world’s largest LED street lighting contract.

announced Friday that it had struck a five-year contract with to supply it with approximately 72,000 fixtures across New Brunswick.

LED stands for light-emitting diode.

The Nova Scotia company estimates that its fixtures will allow NB Power to consume 60 per cent less energy than if it was using conventional lights.

LED Roadway Lighting vice-president Ken Cartmill said in an interview that the deal, to the company’s knowledge, is the largest LED street lighting contract — in terms of lights — yet awarded in the world.

“We successfully competed against the largest lighting companies in the world,” said Cartmill. “This puts us on the map as a major global player.”

Although he declined to provide a dollar value for the contract, LED Roadway Lighting is clearly on a roll.

Last summer, the company inked a two-year, $14-million deal to provide about 24,000 light fittings in Salford, a city about 320 kilometres northwest of London.

In September, it announced that it will provide 8,000 LED street lighting units to the , the Dominican Republic’s state power holding company.

Cartmill said the latest announcement means the company will likely add to the 140 staff working at its Amherst production facility. About 50 others work at the company’s Halifax headquarters.

“First and foremost, this latest contract validates what we’ve been doing in terms of design and approach to the market,” said Cartmill. “We offer high energy efficiency and high reliability, and that message is really resonating for the marketplace.”
