Bizarre junior mining feud confuses investors

Feb 17, 2012 – 9:45 AM ET | Last Updated: Feb 17, 2012 9:50 AM ET

It started with the below press release.

Then the company, a junior miner called Ethiopian Potash Corp., responded with this one.

It is highly irregular for an individual to issue his own press release through Canada Newswire when departing a company, as Bruce Cu**ing did this week. Most ominously, he said that he is involved with a separate firm (G&B Central African Resources Ltd.) that owns potash permits in Ethiopia and gave Ethiopian Potash an option to acquire an interest in them. That raises questions about title on the company’s assets.

Ethiopian Potash referred to Mr. Cu**ing’s whole statement as a “non-material event,” but it has caused some obvious confusion for investors, who are left wondering about the miner’s relationship with G&B.

A quick check of G&B’s website reveals nothing — the site promises that it will go live in September 2008. It seems that deadline was missed.

So what is really going on here? Dundee Capital Markets analyst Richard Kelertas is not sure, but he said that it is indicative of Ethiopian Potash’s “highly disordered internal state.”

“The issuance of an unauthorized press release demonstrates a lack of control which we believe the company cannot afford at this stage in the game,” Mr. Kelertas wrote in a note.

“Furthermore, we are concerned about the sketchy details available regarding the company’s association with G&B. The lack of clarity and information on G&B and its obligations in terms of potash permits to [Ethiopian Potash] adds another negative dimension to the [company's] project and further supports our negative stance on the company.”

Mr. Kelertas maintained a sell rating on Ethiopian Potash shares. He recommends that investors move into Allana Potash Corp. instead, a rival potash play in Ethiopia that he believes has better prospects.

Ethiopian Potash Corp. VP Exploration resigns

TORONTO, Feb. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Mr. Bruce Cu**ing advises that he resigned from his position as VP Exploration of Ethiopian Potash Corp. (TSXV: FED) on January 29, 2012 with immediate effect as of such date. Mr. Cu**ing initially resigned from Ethiopian Potash Corp. on August 19, 2011, however, this resignation was not formally accepted by the Board of Ethiopian Potash Corp. until January 29, 2012. In connection with the resignation Ethiopian Potash Corp. undertook to remove Mr. Cu**ing name from its website by not later than February 3, 2012. Mr Cu**ing remains a director of G&B Central African Resources Ltd. G&B Central African Resources Ltd. owns the potash permits in Ethiopia and is the company that granted Ethiopian Potash Corp. the option to acquire an interest in such potash permits.

An effective way to show that Ethiopian's highly disordered internal state doesn't effect the explorationproces that is managed by Ercospan is by releasing the promissed and already delayed assay results 10-20. When they are good we have something else to talk about, and the company has than some time to reorganise the company. Because that we need stonger management can even blind man see ...more

Well, if any of you plan to move to Allana, by all means do and do your DD if you haven't done so. But as you know we are certainly not in the most bullish stage right now. Getting back to FED, I would be a little concerned after reading this report. GL

No point blaming journalists and analysts. Reports and articles like this are bound to be written after Bruce C decided to sh** in his own bed. Nobody, obviously, can figure out why he would question the claims. Roach and Bruce himself own millions of shares, most of which are not tradeable for many months. Well spoken, Blindbat. I am just as Pzzed about the whole Dundee thing and the last PP with Allana as anyone. My statement about us (Allana) not being in the bullish stage right now was a bit of wry sarcasm. As far as analysts reports go..... normally if you do the opposite of what they recommend you'll do o.k. I don't own fed, but have always had it on my watch list. Looks like FED is ...more

OK, and now to the results published today. Like I expected and wrote before fhe drillholes to the most northern side (17 & 19) ended in overburden, like it did in the Bada-drillings. The most northern hole that hit sylvinite was hole 20 (2,5m @ 30.59). That  hole is about 9 km from the most southern burden of the deposit. We still have to wait for the holes 21 & 22 to see the ...more

You spin it how you want.. The reality is the company has been fielding dozens of calls asking whether the claims are in good standing since the NR. Bruce knew exactly the impact of that statement. To igonre it is naive.

Didn't realize he was ill and sorry to hear that. Still, I don't believe for a second that statement wasn't delivered without intent. If Bruce is ill, perhaps a third party, who acted on his behalf, is responsible. There's lots of dirty players out and it always possible someone else who decided they wanted to drive down the stock for personal gain. With that, I ...more
