Motient and Bell Mobility Bring Down the Bord

Motient and Bell Mobility Bring Down the BordMotient and Bell Mobility Bring Down the Borders For Wireless Data Between the United States and Canada RESTON, Va., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. and Canadian customers of the increasingly popular eLink(SM) and BlackBerry(TM) wireless email services can now transmit and receive Internet email seamlessly as they cross between both countries, due to a new agreement between U.S. network operator Motient Corporation (Nasdaq: MTNT) and Canadian network operator Bell Mobility. eLink and BlackBerry wireless email services operate using a RIM Wireless Handheld(TM) that features a display screen and small keyboard, and is powered by a single rechargeable AA battery. eLink customers can quickly and easily send and receive Internet emails, send text messages to a fax machine and receive operator-assisted pages from telephone callers while indoors, outdoors, and on the move. Motient customers interested in using roaming services in Canada will have to go through a simple process of registering their handheld, for across border roaming services, and there is an additional monthly flat rate roaming fee. Customers will be able to sign up for this service at the end of the month. Both companies provide nationwide roaming within their respective country at no additional fee. Motient's terrestrial network is the first and largest packet data network in the United States. Begun in 1990 as an IBM and Motorola joint venture, Motient now owns and operates the network. It has expanded it to more than 2,000 base stations touching more than 220 million people -- 50 million more than its top competitor -- extending service to 99 percent of the 500 most populated U.S. cities. "Motient's relationship with Bell Mobility allows us to offer a service no one else can provide," said Walter V. Purnell, Jr., president and CEO of Motient. "Our customers and partners are excited about our ability to provide North American roaming." The Bell Mobility network provides wireless communication and data services to 2.7 million Canadians. "Travel between countries has always been the number one challenge in mobile data," said Jacques Robichon, vice president of wireless messaging, Bell Mobility. "It is easy to provide domestic coverage, but finding compatible networks to offer roaming capabilities to customers is extremely difficult. Motient and Bell Mobility's networks use compatible technology, which made this roaming agreement an easy option for our customers." Motient's eLink wireless email service has been available since October of 1999. Now that seamless roaming is available to Canada, eLink and BlackBerry customers can take advantage of Motient and Bell Mobility's expansive coverage with the convenience and simplicity of one bill.
