Fairfax Financial (FFH TSX)

2021 was a turning point in the business with revenues growing 34 per cent, net earnings (including one-time items) up 15x and the consolidated combined ratio down to 95 per cent from 97.8 per cent. Going forward, their insurance businesses are expecting continued hard pricing while the float is short duration and will benefit from higher interest rates. Trading near 1x book value is a discount to the sum of the parts.

Excellent management with Prem Watsa. 2021 a turning point in the business (net earnings up 15x, revenues up 34%). Struggling company that has turned the corner. Insurance business that is able to raise prices. Insurance float is positively affected by increase in interest rates.

retiredcf, having been a Fairfax holder for years, I found it to be one of those "boring" stocks. Their 2021 annual report however is making you feel that your money buying fairfax shares was money well spent. Keeping track of the number of associated companies however is a chore. Still the future looks good, provided comrade Putin will not nuke all of us.
