Good points to think about, One thing regarding your last statement "To to heck with Mexico .....let's form a coalition U.S and Canada and charge huge excise taxes on goods manufactured outside the country." That cannot ever possibly happen because retailers will just pass that tax via price increase onto consumers. Labour participation rate last time I checked is around 60% for US and Canada I believe and wage growth is around 1 -2% growth on average ( not counting the ultra rich 1% in North America ) The US economy ( and canada now for that matter ) will not be able to handle a rise in rates anytime soon Interest rates IMO are NOT going to rise this year , I am guessing Yellen will throw some "Excuse" out there to keep kicking the interest rate can down the road Gold will rise but it will only happen when Euro , Aus , Asia etc their economies start gaining traction and that will devalue the USD which will help gold, also I think that is when they will start raising rates
