RE: NY Landowners Recommend Gasfrac
RE: NY Landowners Recommend GasfracDoes anyone do any DD before posting this stuff? The Vantage LPG Frac process uses GELLED Liquified Petroleum Gas. They get it gelled through the use of chemicals, very similar to the chemicals used in "conventional" gelled hydrocarbon frac systems. The only difference is they use LPG rather than frac oil as the base fluid. LPG needs to have some pressure on it at all times to keep it in the liquid phase (so that it can actually be pumped by positive displacement pumps at the high pressures required for fracturing), and this requires specialized equipment (specifically the Blender to add the proppant), similar to the Liquid CO2 frac equipment developed by FracMaster (Dwight Lorree anyone?), BJ Services Canada, and Trican Well Service.
The GasFrac system is no more environmentally friendly than doing the same frac with frac oil. Similar amounts of chemicals will be used in each case. It's just that upon flow-back, a significant portion of LPG will flash to gas phase, thus cleaning up better than liquid hydrocarbons.
But don't fool yourselves that “Here’s a technology that gets away from chemicals and the use of water,” he said. “LPG is from the earth anyhow.” Come on... you are starting to believe anything positive you read about these guys without really understanding what they are really doing.
GasFrac uses just as much chemistry (or more) than any other frac company out there. They replace large volumes of water with large volumes of LPG. They still put hunderds of tonnes of sand into each well, and thousands of litres of chemicals. You don't really understand the process if you believe otherwise.
But the Kool-Aid tastes great, doesn't it? LOL
