The Globe and Mail attempts to identify the best of breed in each sector of the Canadian stock market, based on a combination of fundamental factors and improving outlooks for growth in its Wednesday, Aug. 1, edition. The Globe's Ian McGugan writes in the Number Cruncher column that he employed the services of Morningstar Canada consultant Craig McGee to find the best stocks in each industrial sector, based on a combination of their estimated returns on equity, their annualized five-year growth rates for earnings and recent increases to analysts estimates of their future earnings. Mr. McGugan only considered stocks that had a market capitalization of more than $1-billion. Stocks ranged in size from relative pipsqueaks such as Paladin Labs and Poseidon Concepts to leviathans such as Rogers Communications and Canadian National Railways. While this collection of stocks represents a diversified Canadian equity portfolio, investors should do their own research before buying any of Mr. McGugan's picks. His other choices for today's column are First Capital Realty, High River Gold Mines, Alimentation Couche-Tard, Agrium, West Fraser Timber, Gildan Activewear, Aimia and Intact Financial.
