Detour Lake Mine in northeastern Ontario has poured its 5 millionth ounce of gold since commercial production began in 2013.

Agnico Eagle, the mine’s parent company, celebrated the milestone in a June 22 statement.

Calling it a “historic” occasion, the company said 5 million ounces of gold is the equivalent to 10,000 bars of gold, which, if laid end to end, would measure higher than Toronto’s CN Tower.

“This is a huge achievement for the operation, one that would not have been possible without the support and assistance of our partners who helped us along the way,” Agnico Eagle said in the statement.

“This is a true milestone in Detour Lake’s life of mine. The team worked together and steadily increased production since production was commenced under Detour Gold in 2013.

“There were a lot of long hours, dedication and effort put in by our employees, our partners, and important stakeholders to help us achieve this milestone. Without the support from the entire team, we would not have reached this point.

Detour Lake Mine is the second-largest gold-producing mine in Canada, with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The Detour Lake operation is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. It has a mine life of approximately 22 years.
