RE:RE:Results today
Tshisekedi backed out of the opposition deal negotiated in Geneva last month to have a "unity candidate" and instead ran on his own ticket with the backing of politician Vital Kamerhe.
This is a historic moment for Mr Tshisekedi's party, the UDPS, who have tried unsuccessfully to win power for decades.
From the Mining Journal piece, it looks promising: so yes, "Tailwind" fit KAT.
But that was assuming Tshisekedi would be part of a coalition government; he's not. The UDPS won outright. So he should be able to plot a clearer course.
And I'm sure the recently formed Mining Promotion Initiative (MPI) will be looking to engage with the new government without delay to express their concerns about the countrys new code and other issues affecting the local industry.
MPIs general secretary, Richard Robinson has made very clear the main issue were the DA's being thrown out: "...investors have invested in the country individually and alongside state companies, on terms guaranteed by the government through legislation, specific guarantees and bilateral trade agreements.
MPI want its guarantees. They believe the DRC needs to respect internationally binding law as failing to honour agreements "would discourage further investment in large and small sustainable projects, all crucial for the countrys economy."
These are my views only. Thanks for reading.
