Science Discussion

I have been looking at Medicago's competition and would like to more fully understand the advantages Medicago may or may not have over another up and coming VLP vaccine competitor - IBIO - I am aware that Medicago holds several patents that they feel are quite important, but this does not seem to be stopping competition from entering the fray, so they must be doing some things differently.

For this laypersons eye, it seems their process is quite similar to Medicago.

I am no expert, but the apparent difference seems to be that this company is specializing in proteins, where MDG is working with Virus Like Particle's

Yes, basically they *infiltrate* a plant with a form of agrobacteria, which has a viral sequences that they want to have replicated to basically accelerate the production of a specific protein. I think Russian scientists invested this method. So they get around the vaccine manufacturing process differently, but ultimately they are producing vaccines with or without sterile virus (it doesn't ...more

rocket65, why do you say "we are years from that though"? Are you saying we are going to have a multi-million dollar plant in North Carolina sitting "idle" for years before they use it? I don't think so

They get the proteins from the tobacco plants. Sorry, for the H1N1 vaccine, Medicago is just in the clinical trial approval stage. As in just past animal testing. So they have a couple of years of work in clinical trials. But yes, the NC plant will be up and running and can produce H5N class vaccines.

Wiz wiz... You have to have protein to breed virus. That's why egg's were and are used. Protein city. There are tons of ways of *building* or designing proteins for suitability in all sorts of biotech and health science undertaking. And especially if you want to hit up virual DNA which has to bind to proteins, so if your messing with virus's you are messing with proteins and assorted ...more
