RE:RE:Interview with Elon Musk
RE:RE:Interview with Elon Musk Actually the battery cells Tesla uses are pretty tiny (at least for the EVs). They use 18650 cells, they just use a lot of them. And yes Tesla does really downplay the whole Li supply problem. I was at the battery show in Florida not too long ago and Kurt Kelty gave a talk there. During the question period he was asked about lithium and basically ruled it out as a non-issue. But the rest of the industry does not really seem to agree, could be a strategy they are using or maybe they just mean that there is enough on Earth and so they will get it (one way or another). About Elon saying that Li-ion batteries should be called cobalt nickel batteries, actually in the industry they are. There are different types of Li-Ion batteries and when people talk about them they uses terms like NMC and NCA which is short for Lithium Nickel Manganese Oxide and Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide. So the Lithium and oxide part are actually left out of the abbreviation.
Sometime this weekend I'll try to put together some technical info about batteries, their compoenents and some facts about weights and material needed etc. Might clarify some things here.
