Will They Step Up To The Plate Again?

The Quebec state must take control of the lithium industry, claims Quebec Solidaire (QS). Without mentioning the nationalization, QS pleads for a majority stake in the projects of extraction of this strategic ore, essential to manufacture the batteries of the electric vehicles...... QS co-spokesperson Manon Mass called for the Quebec government to invest in taking majority control of current mines and future projects, in order to maximize spin-offs in Quebec...... "When you make that decision [to take control], you can decide what the next step is," she said. Private enterprise does not allow positive impacts to be 100% in Quebec. We import the batteries. "...... Ms. Mass maintains that 25 tonnes of lithium are sent each year abroad without benefiting Quebeckers. The fees are insufficient, she denounced, recalling that her party wants to reform the Mining Act, yet adopted in 2013. In addition, the co-spokesperson of QS called on the government to support the projects. lithium processing plant in Quebec....... Last week, Minister of the Economy Pierre Fitzgibbon announced that a Qubec strategy for the development of the lithium-ion battery industry was under preparation at Investissement Qubec and would be launched this fall. Mr. Fitzgibbon was then very clear about his intention to convert the raw material right here. "You have to control the ore," he said. We do not want the product to go outside; I want it to be converted here. "....... He believed that the state should invest in the "second phase", the transformation. The next step would be to create a plant that would make batteries, but these are "pharaonic" projects, in the words of the minister, with respect to capital requirements.
