Market makers in an auction market ( like the TSX or NYSE) are their to create liquidity, they by definition do not carry an inventory or a very small one, as such, cannot manipulate a stock. By " regular traders" in am assuming you are referring to liability traders who are never market makers because they are trading their firms capital and have other objectives then an issuers liquidity. They do carry inventory both long and short. Transactional traders are merely working orders for their clients ( retail or institutional ) and don't carry inventory but will take either the long or short side based on client instruction.
Its not bad to have a lack of knowledge about something, but don't come off like a know it all if you actually have a minimal understanding because you really do sound like a fool.
