Palladium Taking Over in Catalytic Converters

Palladium Taking Over in Catalytic ConvertersHow Palladium Could End Up being More Important than Platinum for Cars and Trucks

From the January 2006 Silver Investor:

"We were asked
our thoughts on palladium at a gold conference several
years ago and basically stated that we thought all the
major auto manufactures had switched back to platinum
and that would be the final re-tooling. This was after
palladium had peaked at over $1000 per ounce and was
selling for more than platinum.

"However, we will now state we are wrong. According to
Business Report, General Motors, the world’s biggest
carmaker by sales, designed its exhaust systems to
substitute palladium for platinum recently. Additionally,
Norilsk Nickel of Russia, the world’s largest palladium
producer, said demand for the cheaper alternative might
rise 63% in 2006.

"Leaders in the auto industry state, “If you replace platinum
with palladium, you get a much more cost-effective
catalyst.” Platinum prices may also come under pressure
as auto manufacturers produce more hybrid cars, which
prefer using palladium due to temperature considerations."
