IMHO:

When somebody is fired, it reads, The person is no longer with the company as of _______, and when somebody resigns because they found a new job this is what is said: left to pursue other opportunities.

Also, when it is a conflict of interest (means - when a person is leaving the company to join another competitor or a simliar company), the person who resigns is let go immediately.

I work for a big corporation, and I have seen many who got fired and many who resigned.
