Mineworkers plan to endorse Humala

Peru's national mining, metals and steelworkers federation FNTMMSP will likely support left-wing presidential candidate Ollanta Humala in the June 5 run-off vote with right-wing congresswoman Keiko Fujimori, federation head Luis Castillo told BNamericas.

Humala's government program is more appealing to the federation than Fujimori's because it has a greater emphasis on improving labor rights, Castillo said. "We believe the program from [Humala's party] Gana Perú is going to improve the labor conditions in our sector," he added.

Nothing is official yet but members plan to meet next week to decide who to support, Castillo said, adding that FNTMMSP is made up of almost 50,000 workers.

Humala won the first round vote held on April 10 with about 30% support, but failed to get enough votes to avoid a run-off.

Recent opinion polls give Humala a slight lead over Fujimori in the run-off.

While Fujimori would likely maintain Peru's free market policies, critics of Humala are concerned that his policies could jeopardize the country's economic stability.

Hey perucho, that union has less than 2,000 affiliates, so if you add all friends and family he won't get more than 5,000 votes (which he alreaddy has, by the way). Negligable amount to make a difference.Keiko will win by at least 100,000 votes, that's my take.Safi

I guess the miners must get fücked over by a lot of different companies to want to support someone like Humala. They should check just over the border and see how other LatAm countries with communist presidents treat their own mine workers.
