Nice: mixed feelings on what this means

While I welcome a hefty profit from this merger I just wonder what it means for competition in Canada.  Our internet/cell rates in Canada are already high so does the future with less competition mean we will see even higher rates?  I have dealt with Rogers in the past, pretty awful company in terms of gouging customers.  I moved to Shaw to get away from Rogers.  Now it looks like we are back to square one again with an awful company having most of the market share in Canada.  Just leaves Telus as competition now.  Something I am not thrilled about.  So I will take the $40 some dollar offered for Shaw shares but long term it looks like we will all pay the price with higher prices down the road.  Just my two cents.

Living in Vancouver, I remember way back we had Rogers and Shaw took over due to some cometition law. And now we would be back to square one. Shaw has just launched Shaw Mobile late last year and provides free no data plan for existing customers.  Since Shaw's Mobile Hotspot provides wifi almost everywhere, even in the parks, there is no need for people like me to have a data plan. We'll have to wait and see, but I think it's as likely to be good news as anything. Right now, Telus and Bell pretty much have a duopoly on wireless.  Rogers and Shaw are sorta competition sometimes, for some people in some cities, but ultimately not really in the same league.  If they expand their network to become serious competition that's probably good for us.
