Kenya – Block 2A
Essel Group ME hold 7802 square kilometers of highly promising property in Kenya known as Block 2A. An FTG survey carried out by Bell Geospace in Q2 of 2014 showed this to be an excellent prospect. In fact, falling in the region of East Africa’s rift system, there are already two prospects which have been confirmed as having a potential of more than a billion barrels (each).
Falling within the confines of Block 2A are sections of two basins which already have proven petroleum systems. They are
- The Mandera Basin: An oil seep known as the Tarbaj which lies only just north of Block 2A’s boundary is part of the same Madera Basin which extends into our property. In it are confirmed source rocks of a marine origin in the lower and mid-Jurassic level. Thus, the basin shows great promise.
- The Anza Basin: The ‘string of pearls’ extending from Africa Oil’s Sala-1 (located 50 kms north-west) to the Badada prospect, which straddles the southern boundary of Block 2A, lies on the margins of the Anza Basin. Drilling there commenced in Q4 of 2014. All the signs point to this basin having immense potential.
Forthcoming plans
Within the next six months, 450-600 line kilometers across both basins will undergo 2D seismic testing. This will enable us to do the following.
- Pinpoint the most optimal locations for drilling.
- Gain confirmation of our estimations of depths and volumes for both our primary (aforesaid) and secondary targets.
- Confirm the status of location A1 as a prospect and also identify potential drilling locations at A1 and A4/5.
- The FTG indicated ‘pearl trends’ in both basins and this 2D testing will help us evaluate them further.
