Good question you pose however let me try to answer it from my perspective.
I am betting AAA mgmt has a buyout price in mind that it can live with however if they were prudent they would also have a parallel plan for production which I believe they do. You can't go into a venture like this without a clear plan to the end game. However if someone comes along at the right time with the right bid, the present value of the bid may outweigh the discounted risk-weighted benefits of the future share appreciation at production. It all boils down to risk appetite which is affected by numerous factors micro and macro.
In KCL's case, your right, KCL shareholders and the Board felt there was too much risk in going alone for the potential pay off at the end. AAA is a different case. Financing really isn't an issue, geopolitics and infrastructure are virtual non issues (although some people still like to they are) and the capex and opex are and never were big hurdles with this shallow deposit.
What it will boil down with for AAA is someone walking in with their checkbook and saying I will give you XX per share for your company and shareholders deciding that the risks of owning AAA shares are either too high or are not high enough to accept the buyout. Personally, if some firm wanted to buyout AAA in two months for $5, I would have a tough decision to make as I could pocket the cash now and potentially invest it in something else which I think may return even more than AAA. That is called the opportunity cost of the decision. It is not always what you think AAA will give you, but what will it give you relative to your other investment choices.
My gut says I will be taking a buyout offer within the next 18 months for $8 or so. Just my thoughts. I am not going to be a seller of AAA until someone takes us out, I have decided that (barring some unforeseen personal circumstances or corporate developments)
A lot of people always talk about BHP and the Chinese when they look at suitors but don't underestimate VALE either, they are huge and this would be chump change for them.
all the best
