You're right that is a real concern and many out there don't understand the relationship between the market and the stock a company issues.

Case in point: I recall many who thought that BP was really being taught a lesson by the drop in stock price during the Gulf oil spill, instead of realizing that more likely it was their very own pension funds that were more likely taking the hit.
